Non-toxic Paints (Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Paints)

by | Jun 20, 2014 | Commercial & Residential Painters Reno

What does low-VOC or zero-VOC mean for your family, pets, and employees?

It means they can all breathe easier.

Paints with VOCs are not just a headache (pun very well intended) during the painting process but can be a headache or lung-ache for many individuals. These paints will continue to release low levels of chemicals and toxins for years even after the paint is dried and cured. The newer low-VOC and zero-VOC paints can help combat health issues for those at risk: Children, pets, elderly, asthmatic, chemically sensitive, allergic, ill-health, and more.

Low and zero-VOC paints can also be a blessing if the entire indoors of a house or office is painted at once. Using these paints the occupants can remain or return to the indoor space immediately and without side effects.

These new low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are water-based and easy to clean with warm water and soap. If you have a lot of paint left over you can get rid of it easier, it is not considered hazardous waste. They also help the environment if we look at the big picture and think of how much paint is being applied across the globe.

What about durability?

Just about every brand and type of paint has a personality that goes well beyond its color. Most all low-VOC and zero-VOC paints perform just as well as their more toxic counterparts. There are some reports that zero-VOC paints require more coverage or touch-ups but it truly is all about the brand you purchase.

But low-VOC and zero-VOC paints cost too much!

The price differences between VOC and zero-VOC paints is not much when comparing the higher end brands to one another. If you were to compare a “cheaper” brand of paint to a high quality zero-VOC paint the price could be twice as much but that’s comparing, yes, I’ll say it, Apples & Oranges. The most important thing is the health of those around you.

At Radcliffe Painting, Inc we always insist on using low-VOC or zero-VOC paints for places like day cares, hospitals, doctor offices, and anywhere we feel that the public, pets, or individuals may be at risk. Call us to see what we can do for your home or office. 775-229-1547

It’s also a great idea to use a mold-fighting non-voc paint or primer that contains Microban or an equivalent.
